  1. Interim Online Review 09/11/10

    Hey Nat,

Okay - so we spoke at length yesterday about some of the stuff you've got to get your head around. Nuff said. In truth, there's not a huge amount of thumbnail action available to me today - and no Photoshop stuff-in-progress (I am aware that you were absent last week). I'll focus instead on the positive; those last thumbnails are pretty mouthwatering; I like how ornate they are - in a way they synch nicely with the 'ornate' nature of the book itself. And that brings me on to the issue of your 'visual concept'. Be aware that at the crit, I'll be specifically interested in student's design rationale for visualising the spaces in the way they have. Remember (and if I'm repeated myself here I apologise!) you've been commissioned to generate the concept art for an animated version of the book - and cg 'realism' is but one style/aesthetic among many; there are plenty of other 'isms' from which to derive inspiration. I want to see how you develop your production design 'rule book' - i.e., the system of metaphors underpinning the approach to the design of this space; an example of this might be 'surface pattern'; so, you identify that one of the absolutely significant thing about Peake's world is how chockfull of description and detail this is (as a reading experience). What you do is translate this density into a visual 'traffic' - so that every surface of every object is alive with pattern and detail... I'm not suggesting this IS what your visual concept is or should be, but rather it demonstrates what I mean by 'visual concept'; you take an idea vital to the book, and find a visual means to translate it into the colour values, fixtures, fittings, textures, forms of your invented spaces.

  2. I've posted previously re. your essay, but see below:

Here is a list of links back to the CGAA Group Blog, where I have recently uploaded loads of information regarding the way I want students to tackle their written assignments. As you now prepare your unit 2 assignments on production design, pay close attention to the advice given. I will be looking for clear improvement in terms of use of language, academic ‘voice’, use of conventions, argument structure and correct methods of referencing.

Also – be sure to check out the 2 student essays uploaded to myUCA/Space/Unit Materials – good examples of degree level written assignments. Take the time to read them.
