I changed the barrier as I didn't like the previous, first to metal, but now to wood - which I like the most.

Ok, an update. I was thinking of how to show the cells moving through the cycle, and conveyor belt came to mind. I'm not happy with the look of the concept as it doesn't feel 'hand made' enough for what i'm trying to create, but it looks cleaner / less cluttered than the previous ideas.
